2019 in film
i took a lot of photos in 2019. 456 to be exact. i find it funny how often i was willing to update my instagram account and now that i have my own space i rarely post things. i would stress about which ones to post on this site as more rolls got developed. eventually i’d just not bother. but i did take a lot of photos this year that i really love and wanted to share.
i decided that instead of stressing about updating previous albums, i’d just throw together 24 of my favorite photos taken with my cameras. these probably aren’t my most technical photos, but each one means something to me. i’m hopeful that i will take more photos in 2020. enjoy!

morganne and rupert
i met up with morganne and rupert one day and we took a stroll through herbert von king park. rupert is such a warm dog and i love being around him. he also loves to play. i happened to catch him in mid-flight. i can hear moganne saying, “wingardium leviosa”.

halloween party
this was taken at my company’s halloween party. i work with some incredibly talented people. throughout the night, i kept seeing this couple walking around. their attention to detail was great. the entire night was wild and this photo brings me back there.

joe's jacket
this was taken on christmas eve 2018. my brother used to have that painting on his wall when we were growing up. there’s something about it and my younger cousin running by that i really enjoy.

jack, new years eve
another one from 2018. jack’s house is full of instruments and i love when we spontaneously start making music. i really feel like this captured the vibe of new years eve at his place.

jesse, new years eve
same party as the photo above. taking photos of my friends is a lot of fun. jesse doesn’t like his photo being taken so i had to sneak one in while he was playing.

the scowl
i was walking through my old neighborhood and passed by this window. i’ve walked past this sign many times, but never knew there was a cat residing there. its face was perfect.

post op pete
i clearly didn’t take this photo. my friend blake did. i don’t remember posing for it. this was after getting two wisdom teeth pulled. i opted for general anesthesia. i definitely fell through the earth. apparently i kept complimenting the nurse’s nail polish. it was a funny surprise when it showed up in my developed film.

truck fire on the bqe
i work in a building that offers a lot of great views of new york city. we also get to witness the non-stop flow of traffic. it’s always interesting and we actually keep track of the bridge traffic. one day someone mentioned smoke and we caught a pretty gnarly truck fire. i ran up to the roof and took this photo.

the cone
this is my parent’s dog, baci. he’s old and fat and i love him. he’s my brother. he’s also a total goofball. i try to take his photo whenever i come home to visit. 2019 was a rough year for baci. he went through a series of medical issues including tearing his acl. he’s a sweet boy and has been a trooper through it all. his expressions always crack me up and this cone shot is exactly what i mean.

sara and jess
i work with sara (cosmic pants) and she knits these beautiful sweaters. each one is so colorful. when she makes a new one, we find a spot near work and take some photos. she knits with a group of people from work. she and her friend jess had made the same sweater. after taking a bunch of photos on my iphone, i pulled out my contax and snapped this one.

alex in my bedroom
alex is my roommate’s cat. i’ve known him for almost 3 years now. i love him like a brother. we spend a lot of time together. i think he just likes my window. either way, i get to chill with this dude on a daily basis. i find this photo really calming. it captures his essence without seeing much of him.

chase on the hunt
chase was adopted by my friend, jack. he’s a good boy. he’s also a maniac. this was one of the few moments i’ve had with him where he stayed still long enough for me to get a photo of him.

baci in the sun
this dog is such a ham. i love him. this is just one of those photos that will always make me smile.

trip to staten island
i took my fist journey to staten island this year with my friends from work. my coworker took me to his homeland and we had pizza and drank beer in the oldest bar on staten island. the night was a lot of fun and this lovely ferry ride was the start of it all.

blake on the g
i spend a lot of time with blake. i believe this was on a ride either to or from a place we practice music in. i took the same photo with the flash on, but i think the natural light really works here. blake wears a mustache well.

river life
i go kayaking with a group of friends each summer and this year i brought blake. i usually ride solo in kayaks but decided to ride with him. this was taken on a different 35mm point and shoot and not my normal contax. it sometimes gets wonky with exposure, but i really loved how this photo came out. it was also hot as heck that day.

alex 2
every morning alex comes into my bedroom to sit in the window and take in the busy street outside. i love the way the shadows landed on him. he hates when i take his photo.

yardy 2019
a friend from work asked me if i would be interested in playing at a backyard show. it had been a while since i had performed and it was so much fun. there were a ton of great bands that played throughout the night. it was a blast and the final band really brought the yard down. that is the drummer’s daughter. once the song started, she got up and would not stop cheering for her mom. i wanted to capture the moment.

alex and leah at the renaissance fair
i took a trip upstate to the renaissance fair with some friends from work. alex and leah really got into the spirit and wore these beautiful outfits. we all bought instruments and i took this photo during a little practice session we were having while waiting for the joust.

bonk!
this was also taken at the renaissance fair. i wasn’t sure if could actually capture this dude’s whip cracks. i just thought this came out really cool.
too many edgy dad jokes for my taste though.

JEEP MEETING
this was a magical weekend for a lot of reasons. i rarely use the self-timer on my camera but i’m glad i was in this picture with arrien and blake. we had such great talks on the drive up to our campsite and arrien was a great guide for our weekend adventure. blake kept a journal and it’s so much fun reading back on all the crazy conversations, plans, and jeep meetings we had. i’ll leave you with this quote from arrien:
“if you arrive dry and leave wet, you are a hill person” - arrien

amelia
i’ve known amelia for a few years. our meetups are always super spontaneous. i work well with those types of friendships. i always appreciate our conversations. i’m not sure why, but every time i’ve tried to take her photo i would mess it up. this was the first time i took a photo of her i was really proud of. i also think it really captures her spirit.

leah at the arcade
this was my second annual trip to chinatown and the arcade with a group of friends from work. i actually took a photo of leah on the same skee ball machine the year before when it was on the opposite side of the arcade. my camera could not handle how dark it was inside. i was trying to capture the pink glow all the games and lights were giving off. i’m still happy how this photo came out and it brings back good memories.

jack, chase, and bodhi
this is from a camping trip over the summer. we were walking on a trail with chase and bodhi. jack’s great to both of them and i loved how they would always make sure to hang near him as we went deeper in. i really thought chase would get tired from being able to run around everywhere but that dog has boundless energy. bodhi is chill as heck and one of the few small dogs i actually like being around. these dudes are part of my extended family.
